From the ground up – culture, community and habitat

Our Hashy garden is now a native plant and insect habitat.

We have planted ninety-five seedlings to encourage biodiversity, improve local conditions and support bees, birds and other creatures.

Our garden was planted on 18 June and we were Welcomed to Country by the Bunurong Land Council.

This project was proudly supported by Glen Eira Council through the Community Grants Program 2022-23.

Dianella longifolia

Pale Flax Lily
A grass plant found in most regions of Australia.

Myoporum parvifolium

Creeping Boobialla
A ground cover which creates a dense mat of fine-leaved foliage with purple toned new growth. Small white flowers in spring to summer.

Wahlenbergia communis

Tufted Bluebell
A wildflower found all across the Australian mainland. A great pollinator.

A variable herb native to coastal Australia and New Zealand.

Arthropodium milleflorum

Pale Vanilla Lily
A perennial plant native to Australia. It occurs in various habitats including alpine areas. The fleshy tubers are edible.

Prostanther incisa

Native Thyme
A type of native mint shrub once used as a medicinal herb, but now more commonly featured in cooking and herbal teas. It’s a highly aromatic shrub, rich in essential oils, giving off a minty aroma when crushed or rubbed.

Indigofera australis

Australian Indigo
A beautiful ornamental shrub which is also a good plant for wildlife and a good nectar and food source for butterflies, bees and insects. It flowers through spring, with spires of pink to purple blooms.

Goodenia
A ground covering plant that features buttercup yellow flowers over an extended period in spring and summer and bright green fleshy leaves.

Eryngium ovinum

Blue Devil
A perennial herb, which dies down during autumn and emerges in late winter to flower in summer.

Billardiera scandens

Apple Berry
A climbing plant with fleshy green and purple fruit which turns yellow when ripe. Fruit may be eaten raw when it has fallen to the ground, or roasted if still green. The skin is hairy and similar to peach and the sweet astringent flavour similar to kiwifruit.

Podolepis jaceoides

Showy copper wire daisy
A perennial wildflower widely distributed over eastern and south-eastern Australia. The roots are edible.
